The California Energy Commission (CEC) 2008 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings went into effect January 1, 2010. The requirement for when the 2008 Standards must be followed is dependent on when the application for the building permit is submitted. If the application is submitted on or after January 1, 2010, the 2008 Standards must be met.

On August 1, 2009, the California Green Building Standards Code went into effect but is not mandatory. The code sets targets for energy efficiency, water consumption, dual plumbing systems for potable and recyclable water, diversion of construction waste from landfills and use of environmentally sensitive materials in construction and design, including eco-friendly flooring, carpeting, paint, coatings, thermal insulation and acoustical wall and ceiling panels. The California Green Building Standards Code is voluntary until 2010, when it is expected to become mandatory. |
